OUR HERITAGE

California Roots.
Pacific Heritage.

A representative rugby tradition. An international outlook. A new generation carrying the Grizzlies name forward.

THE NAME WE CARRY

A Jersey Connects Generations.

The Grizzlies story reaches beyond a single team or tour. It connects the Pacific Coast’s representative rugby heritage with a modern California program built around development, community and opportunity.

The California Grizzlies describe their identity as an homage to the original Pacific Coast Grizzlies: a way of honoring previous generations while creating a pathway for those coming next. That shared heritage is meaningful in its own right. It does not imply that every historic Pacific Coast team and today’s organization are the same legal entity.

From international touring sides to young players discovering representative rugby, the thread is an ambition to learn, compete and bring people together through the game.

MILESTONES IN THE RECORD

A Story Across Generations.

Selected documented moments from Pacific Coast rugby and the modern California Grizzlies. This is a growing history, not a complete tour register.

1972

A Pacific Coast Team on the World Stage.

A documented New Zealand tour places the Pacific Coast Grizzlies in an international rugby story more than five decades ago. U.S. Rugby Foundation records identify Craig Sweeney among the touring players. This is a milestone in the surviving record, rather than a claim about the program’s founding date.

Representative Rugby With International Ambition.

The U.S. Rugby Foundation’s biography of Denis Shanagher records the Grizzlies’ victory over Italy in 1979, alongside territorial championship success across the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Pacific Coast jersey brought together players capable of testing themselves beyond their home clubs.

WOMEN IN THE GRIZZLIES STORY

Pioneers. Players. Possibility.

The women who toured New Zealand in 1989 helped create opportunities at a time when the international women’s game was still taking shape. Rugby Southland records the Pacific Coast Grizzlies as the opposition in New Zealand’s first official women’s national team match at Lancaster Park, Christchurch.

Remembering that contribution gives the Grizzlies heritage its full breadth. Today’s girls’ and women’s pathways belong in a story where women have long helped expand what rugby can offer.

CALIFORNIA IN OUR COLORS

A Bear. An Ocean. A Sense of Place.

The Grizzlies bear is a deliberate connection to California. The official brand story ties gold to the 1848 Gold Rush and navy to the Pacific Ocean. Together, these symbols give the modern identity a sense of place while acknowledging the generations behind it.
